Italian Sandwich / Sandwich Italien
The thing that makes this sandwich delicious is the pickled
pepperoncini. Peperoncino (plural peperoncini) is the generic Italian word for
any hot chili pepper - the sweet peppers are called peperone (plural peperoni).
But just to make things confusing, pepperoncini is ALSO the name given to a specific
kind of Italian chili pepper that you can find in the pickle aisle of many
American grocery stores. Pickled
pepperoncini look and taste a lot like pickled banana peppers so feel free to
substitute if pickled banana peppers are easier for you to find.
